Beehive Joins Forces with Other Local Businesses to Re-open Deseret Peak Aquatic Center

TOOELE, UTAH, March 13-2014 – The Deseret Peak Aquatic Center is scheduled to re-open on May 24th, following a one-year hiatus, after donations were collected from local businesses in order to subsidize the operating costs of the facility.

Tooele County has previously subsidized the Deseret Peak Complex since its inception in 1999, however, in 2013 county officials determined that the operating costs were simply no longer in the budget, and the decision was made to have the complex available on a reservation basis only.

Tooele County’s Parks and Recreation Director, Mark McKendrick, approached the Tooele County Commissioners earlier this year with a revised budget and proposal that would allow the pool to be reopened for the 2014 season.

“After considering all revisions to the budget, we were still $60,000 short of what we would need in order to cover the operating costs,” said McKendrick. “The County offered to contribute $30,000, if we were able to come up with the additional $30,000, and that was a challenge that we readily accepted.”

McKendrick and the Director of Facilities Management, Isaac Astill, immediately began approaching local businesses in hopes of raising the necessary funds.

“The response from local businesses was overwhelming,” McKendrick said. “Not all were in a position to help, but everyone has been very receptive and supportive. The county really depends on the Deseret Peak facility to meet the demands of the community, and I think a lot of residents were really disappointed by its closure last year.”

“When Beehive Broadband received the request for donation, we were eager to become involved,” said Human Resource Manager, Lorri Witkowski. “ Beehive is very involved with the Live Fit Coalition to reduce Tooele County’s obesity rate and this was the perfect opportunity for us to do something for the community that gets people moving and brings families together.”

The Deseret Peak Aquatic Center will be opened for the 2014 season from May 24th to August 16th.
